The Battle of the Bulge provides the setting for this realistic look at the pathos of war. Led by Holley (Van Johnson), the men of the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division spend the winter of 1945 in the Ardennes Forest preparing to battle the German army. Trapped and demoralized, the men do manage to work together to defend their position. Academy Award nominations included Best Picture, Director (William A. Wellman), and Supporting Actor (James Whitmore, for his role as the battle-scarred sergeant, Kinnie). It won for Best Writing and Cinematography.

Katie Higgins (Esther Williams) and her Arkansas farm family need a new bull for the farm. They are all good swimmers and are convinced by shady promoter Windy Webbe (Jack Carson) that they should compete in a swimming race across the English Channel as the way to raise money to buy the bull. They arrive in England where, one day while practicing for her swim, Katie meets dashing Frenchman Andre Lanet (Fernando Lamas) who both helps and distracts Katie in her preparations for the race. But, Katie does succeed in her swim, and Andre even jumps in and swims the final mile with her. A highlight of this film involves the cartoon sequence representing Katie's dream in which she swims with Tom and Jerry.
