In the 16th century, Spanish conquistador Gonzalo Pizarro (Alejandro Repulles) is leading his men through the jungles of Peru looking for the fabled cities of gold. He orders Don Pedre de Ursa (Ruy Guerra), Don Fernando de Guzman (Peter Berling), and Don Lope de Aguirre (Klaus Kinski) to act as scouts and decide if they should continue the exploration. Along the way, they must deal with hostile natives, starvation, and disease. Aguirre has a maniacal thirst for glory that turns into insanity with tragic results. Based on the real-life journals of Brother Gaspar de Carvajal (Del Negro) who was a member of Pizarro's mission.
