Escaping the Mexican War, Jeremiah (Robert Redford) heads to the Rocky Mountains where he meets Bear Claw (Will Geer) and, with Bear Claw's tutoring, becomes a man of nature who lives off the land and wins the friendship of the Crow Indians. But, after the Crow kill his family, Jeremiah becomes an Indian killer, and his life changes forever. This movie causes the viewer to take a fresh look at one's surroundings and appreciate nature.
