First, Kim manages to get Rachel to dump her maid of honor, and then she becomes involved with the best man who happens to be another recovering alcoholic. Rachel's father (Bill Irwin) is divorced from her mother Abby (Debra Winger) and is now married to a Black woman, Carol (Anna Deavere Smith). Since the divorce, Abby has become estranged from her family. Tensions flare over the long weekend as Kim goes out of her way to make everything go wrong and creates one emotional drama after another. Hathaway received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

But that marriage is doomed when Flap begins an affair with a college student, and Emma turns to a married man (John Lithgow) for solace. Meanwhile, Aurora deals with being a grandmother while finding her own consolation in her next-door neighbor, astronaut Garrett Breedlove (Jack Nicholson). Academy Awards were received for Best Picture, Actress (MacLaine), Supporting Actor (Nicholson), Director, and Writing. There were also six nominations, including Best Actress (Winger) and Supporting Actor (Lithgow).

Sissy tells Bud that she wants him to prove he is a real cowboy, and when Mickey Gilley (himself) announces a bull-riding contest, Bill signs up hoping to win the contest and Sally as well. This is the film that made the mechanical bull so popular in bars.
