Louis Gossett Jr. takes on the role of the drill sergeant who turns boys into men, and Debra Winger plays Gere's love interest, the town girl with her own dreams of improving her station in life. An Oscar was presented to Gossett for his supporting role, and the song "Up Where We Belong" also won. Debra Winger received a nomination as Best Actress.    1 User Review

  Rachel (Rosemarie DeWitt) is getting married to African American Sidney (Tunde Adebimpe), and the wedding party assembles at her family's Connecticut home. Rachel's sister, neurotic Kim (Anne Hathaway), leaves rehab to attend, and she makes herself the center of the wedding weekend. First, Kim manages to get Rachel to dump her maid of honor, and then she becomes involved with the best man who happens to be another recovering alcoholic. Rachel's father (Bill Irwin) is divorced from her mother Abby (Debra Winger) and is now married to a Black woman, Carol (Anna Deavere Smith). Since the divorce, Abby has become estranged from her family. Tensions flare over the long weekend as Kim goes out of her way to make everything go wrong and creates one emotional drama after another. Hathaway received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

Academy Awards were received for Best Picture, Actress (MacLaine), Supporting Actor (Nicholson), Director, and Writing. There were also six nominations, including Best Actress (Winger) and Supporting Actor (Lithgow).

Sissy tells Bud that she wants him to prove he is a real cowboy, and when Mickey Gilley (himself) announces a bull-riding contest, Bill signs up hoping to win the contest and Sally as well. This is the film that made the mechanical bull so popular in bars.
