College dean Andy Safian (Bill Pullman) and his wife, Tracy (Nicole Kidman), are busy renovating their home when Andy runs into an old school friend who is now a surgeon, Dr. Jed Hill (Alec Baldwin). Andy invites Jed to move into their attic bedroom, but all does not go well. Tracy does not care for Jed who spends much of his time drinking at the saloon. Meanwhile, Andy is helping in the investigation of a serial killer whose victims are college students on campus. When Tracy experiences abdominal pain, Jed leaves the bar and appears at the hospital where he operates on her and removes more than he should, and, as events unfold, Jed becomes a suspect in Andy's criminal case.
