The deteriorating relationships of couples unfold in this story that ends in tragedy. Teenager Arthur (Michael Angarano) busses tables in a restaurant where his former babysitter Annie (Kate Beckinsale) works as a waitress. Annie, who is estranged from her husband Glenn (Sam Rockwell), is having an affair with Nate (Nicky Katt), the husband of her friend and co-worker Barb (Amy Sedaris). At school, Arthur and his classmate Lila (Olivia Thirlby) have been flirting, but Arthur is more interested in trying to deal with his parents' (Griffin Dunne and Jeanetta Arnette) recent separation. These relationships provide the background for a tragedy that will affect them all.
