There is a crisis in the land: screams are becoming hard to find, and rolling blackouts are predicted. Mike (voice of Billy Crystal) and Sulley (voice of John Goodman) are the company's best scream producers, but when they allow a little girl (voice of Mary Gibbs) from Earth to enter their domain, chaos becomes the order of the day. Randy Newman's song "If I Didn't Have You" won an Oscar, and his musical score was nominated. The film was also nominated for Best Animated Feature, a new category.

Lisa Simpson (voice of Yeardley Smith) takes on the environmental-awareness cause to clean up Springfield's lake, while her father, Homer (voice of Dan Castellaneta), remains clueless and even dares his son, Bart (voice of Nancy Cartwright), to skateboard around town in the nude. Matters take a downhill turn when Homer brings a pig home as a family pet, which leaves Marge (voice of Julie Kavner) nagging him to get rid of the pig's droppings. Homer dumps the pig's waste in the lake–an act that results in getting the attention of E.P.A. head Russ Cargill (voice of Albert Brooks) who convinces President Schwarzenegger (voice of Harry Shearer) to have a plastic dome placed over Springfield. Now, it is up to Homer to save Springfield.
