Los Angeles superhero John Hancock (Will Smith) is a sarcastic, anti-social alcoholic whose good deeds cause mayhem and are so destructive that they are causing the city millions to repair his damage following a "rescue." After Hancock rescues Ray from the path of an oncoming train, Ray takes him home and is determined to change Hancock's lifestyle. But, Ray's wife Mary (Charlize Theron) wants no part of the superhero because he is a bad influence on their young son Aaron (Jae Head). Nevertheless, Ray has a plan for Hancock that may–or may not–result in changing his image and bringing the public back to his support.
