This film is the second of three Harry Palmer (Michael Caine) entries: "Ipcress File" (1965) and "Billion Dollar Brain" (1967). This time around, Palmer is sent to East Berlin where he sets up a phony funeral in order to help out Soviet intelligence officer Col. Stok (Oskar Homolka) who needs aid in his effort to defect.

This film led to two more "Harry Palmer" sequels. Based on Len Deighton's fine spy novel, the film continues in the same vein with Michael Caine as the British secret agent Palmer whose mission is to investigate brainwashing of scientists. The trail leads behind the Iron Curtain while Palmer searches for missing Dr. Radcliff (Aubrey Richards) who possesses the valuable file with the word "Ipcress" printed on it. When Radcliff is found, it is learned that he has been brainwashed, and now Palmer is battling not only the kidnappers but the CIA as well. Sequels: "Funeral in Berlin" and "Billion Dollar Brain."
