Anna uses the girl's diary, and the clues, albeit in Russian, lead her to Semyon (Armin Mueller-Stahl) who, unknown to Anna, heads a brutal crime family. Semyon wants to get his hands on the diary because of the secrets it holds, and he also wants the baby. But, the diary is not the only thing holding secrets. Semyon's son Dirill (Vincent Cassel) and underling Nickolai (Viggo Mortensen) have their own secrets–some of which are revealed in the diary–and will stop at nothing to get their hands on that diary. Mortensen received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

During the ensuing news coverage, the media thrusts Tom and his family into the spotlight, and a one-eyed thug from Philadelphia, Carl Fogarty (Ed Harris), identifies Tom as a killer from 15 years ago and leaves for Millbrook to confront him. The film received two Academy Award nominations, including Best Supporting Actor (William Hurt).

Later, Gallimard is arrested and put on trial for treason, and the affair with Song is revealed while Gallimard maintains that he had no idea of the ruse.
