  Teenager Sharon (Shirley Temple) is so infatuated with 40-year-old playboy artist Dick Nugent (Cary Grant) that she sneaks into his apartment one night hoping to model for him. When this is discovered by Sharon's older sister, Judge Margaret Turner (Myrna Loy), she threatens Dick with jail if he does not agree to date Sharon for one week to help Sharon get over her infatuation with him. Dick agrees to take Sharon out, but as the week progresses, it is he and Margaret who discover mutual interests in each other.

The villain is Alonzo Hawk (Keenan Wynn), and he wants to build a skyscraper where Mrs. Steinmetz's house now stands. Hawk's nephew, Willoughby Whitfield (Ken Berry), falls in love with Nicole and provides legal aid in the fight against Hawk. Meanwhile, Herbie finds a different kind of aid when he leads all of the San Francisco Volkswagens in a battle against the bulldozers.

But, while visiting a ranch, Ann discovers that a man she has been questioning is, in fact, Michael. By now, problems lie deep and extend to Alan wanting to end the marriage.

  This was the first time Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn appeared together on the screen. They play sports columnist Sam (Tracy) and political reporter Tess (Hepburn) who carry on a feud through their columns. They finally meet when their editor Clayton (Reginald Owen) introduces them to try to make peace. They seem to have nothing in common–except love–but they marry. The marriage is filled with problems, and after Tess is named "Woman of the Year," Sam walks out. Now, Tess tries to mend her ways in order to win Sam back. Hepburn was nominated for an Oscar, and an Oscar was won for Best Original Screenplay.
