This film is based on the 1970s' TV series about time travel. Now, Rick is encouraged by scientist Holly Cantrell (Anna Friel), and he finishes building his time-travel device. Fireworks salesman Will Stanton (Danny McBride) leads Rick and Holly to a cave where they test the machine and find themselves in a parallel universe. They lose their time-travel machine, and, with help from their monkey-like guide Chaka (Jorma Taccone), they begin their search through a vast, unknown world where they must contend with dinosaurs, giant mosquitoes, and other creepy creatures in their attempt to find the machine.

While waiting to approach Jones, Dale witnesses crooked cop Carol (Rosie Perez) and Jones kill a man. Dale panics and flees the scene, leaving behind his still-smoldering joint. Jones finds the joint, gets help from middle man Red (Danny McBride), and tracks it back to Saul and Dean. Now, hit men appear on the scene, and Dale and Saul try to escape while bullets and body parts fly through the air.

In this satire on Hollywood filmmaking, Oscar-winning actor Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.) just doesn't fit in with the other actors–Tugg Speedman (Ben Stiller), Alpa Chino (Brandon T. Jackson), Kevin Sandusky (Jay Baruchel), and Jeff Portnoy (Jack Black)–on the set. Bickering fills the air, and after director Kamien Cockburn (Steve Coogan) is threatened with being fired by the film's producer Les Grossman (Tom Cruise), he sends the cast by helicopter to the jungles of Southeast Asia where filming is to be done by hidden cameras. Meanwhile, the film is axed, and the actors find themselves in a real war, lost in the jungle where they are hunted down by a Burmese drug ring, led by twelve-year-old Tran (Brandon Soo Hoo), that believes the actors are soldiers. Now, their acting skills really come into play. Robert Downey Jr. received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
