This rendition of Hemingway's classic story is about the "Lost Generation" of expatriates who roamed Europe between the two World Wars. The plot revolves around American news correspondent Jake Barnes (Tyrone Power) who suffers from impotence following the war. For a diversion, he travels to Spain with his cohorts–Mike Campbell (Errol Flynn), Lady Brett Ashley (Ava Gardner), Robert Cohn (Mel Ferrer), and Bill Gorton (Eddie Albert). Lady Brett is engaged to Mike but is attracted to Jake, and, despite his impotence, she pursues him. While in Spain, Lady Brett becomes involved with matador Pedro Romero (Robert Evans), and adds one more man to her list of lovers.
