  A bisexual novelist, Catherine Tramell (Sharon Stone), is a suspect in a murder that closely resembles the plot of her latest bestseller. San Francisco homicide Detective Nick Curran (Michael Douglas) becomes attracted to her as he investigates Tramell for the ice pick murder. Meanwhile, Nick's partner Gus Moran (George Dzundza) and his psychiatrist Beth Gardner (Jeanne Tripplehorn) are concerned for Nick's safety as more murders occur. But, Nick's sexual attraction to Catherine is not helping the investigation, and Nick unwittingly enters into Catherine's cat-and-mouse game.

Sonny moves in with his childhood friends Deputy Sheriff Dave Lockhart (Josh Brolin) and Dave's wife Ann (Sarah Wynter) and soon begins an affair with Ann, which threatens both the marriage and Sonny and Dave's lifelong friendship.
