This is the final episode (of five) of Truffaut's "Antoine Doinel" series, which started 20 years previously with "The 400 Blows." Antoine, now in his 30s, reflects on his past loves and adds them to his autobiographical novel. Currently, he is taking on a new lover while awaiting a divorce from his current wife. Problems arise with both the divorce and new lover, and he joins a past lover. They reminisce about their past affair, and he also visits with another old friend.

Yet another adaptation of the Alexandre Dumas novel comes to the screen in the story about D'Artagnan (Justin Chambers) striving to become a Musketeer like his father. As a child, D'Artagnan had witnessed the evil Febre (Tim Roth) killing his parents, and he arrives in Paris seeking to avenge his parents' deaths. D'Artagnan learns that the Musketeers have been disbanded by Cardinal Richelieu (Stephen Rea), and he searches for Musketeers Aramis (Nick Moran), Athos (Jan Gregor Kremp) and Porthos (Steve Spiers). During his search, D'Artagnan joins forces with Francesca (Mena Suvari), whose mother had served the Queen (Catherine Deneuve), and Francesca has remained close to her. By story's end, D'Artagnan prevents a war and falls in love with Francesca.

Her chance comes when a wealthy, but odd, couple–H.J. (Alan Bates) and Lois (Maggie Smith)–offer her refuge. When Marya becomes the mistress of H.J., Lois barely tolerates their actions. The story is loosely based on the early life of Jean Rhys before she became a writer.
