As Carmel Boxer's (Gabrielle Union) African American relatives gather in Alabama for her funeral, her brother, Helms (Billy Dee Williams), arrives from Paris but wants nothing to do with the funeral or his extended family. Although society has changed over the years, Carmel's interracial affair with Bear Korngold (young Bear played by Daniel Bess) in the 1950s forced a wedge in the family that has remained for half a century. Now, Helms must confront his family and the demons that have plagued them over the years.
