Based on the "Lonely Hearts Killers" crimes, which were committed in the 1940s, this film shows how New York detectives–Elmer C. Robinson (John Travolta), who was obsessed with the murders, and his partner Charles Hildebrandt (James Gandolfini)–tracked down Ray Fernandez (Jared Leto) and Martha Beck (Salma Hayek). Their scam was to swindle elderly women out of their money and then murder them to destroy any evidence. Fernandez and Beck were finally arrested, confessed to 12 of their murders, and were electrocuted the same day at Sing Sing prison in 1951.
