Adventures of Huck Finn   1993     3 stars    PG, 108 min.

Director: Stephen Sommers
Cast: Elijah Wood, Courtney B. Vance, Robbie Coltrane, Jason Robards, Ron Perlman, Dana Ivey, Anne Heche, Curtis Armstrong, Frances Conroy, James Gammon, Paxton Whitehead, Tom Eldredge, Laura Bell Bundy, Mary Louise Wilson, Danny Tamberelli

This production stays close to the first half of Mark Twain's novel. The con-men, "the King" (Jason Robards) and "the Duke" (Robbie Coltrane), are played well with hints of humor as they impersonate royalty and try to swindle two sisters (Anne Heche and Laura Bell Bundy) out of their fortune. Meanwhile, the innocent boy, Huck (Elijah Wood), has escaped from his brutal father, Pap (Ron Perlman), and has joined escaped slave Jim (Courtney B. Vance) on a rafting trip down the Mississippi River. Huck and Jim develop an understanding of each other and then run into "the King" and "the Duke" along the way. It doesn't take long for Huck and Jim to be drawn reluctantly into the schemes of "the King" and "the Duke."

Having forsaken the art world for her job as guest-coordinator at a Manhattan hotel and lacking a love life, overly cautious Nora Wilder (Parker Posey) is not living the "good life." It doesn't help that her mother (Gena Rowlands) never misses the chance to point out that Nora is now in her thirties and not in a solid relationship. Adding to her discontent is that her best friend Audrey (Drea de Matteo) just celebrated her fifth wedding anniversary with her adoring husband Mark (Tim Guinee)–but Audrey does question whether she is really in a "perfect marriage." Then Nora meets and falls for well-known French actor Julien (Melvil Poupaud) who asks her to go to France with him. Nora declines, but later, at Audrey's urging, Nora throws caution to the wind, and the two women fly to Paris in search of Julien. It turns out that Nora has lost Julien's phone number and he has a common name, which result in a search involving a more than a few humorous moments.
