Genre: Drama
Director: Lewis Milestone
Cast: Anne Baxter, Farley Granger, Jane Withers, Dana Andrews, Walter Brennan, Dean Jagger, Ann Harding, Carl Benton Reid, Walter Huston, Erich von Stroheim

During the Cold War, this film was edited to de-emphasize the role of brave Russians holding back advancing Nazi forces during World War II. A comparison between this version and the original, titled "The North Star," provides an interesting look at the use of propaganda in the industry.

One of my favorite comedies1fatts 03/26/2007
This comedy, famously modelled on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs places the great Barbara Stanwyck doing the "heart of gold tramp" in the middle of seven ivory tower professors living a monastic life, dedicating themselves to the writing of a new encyclopedia. (You remember written encycolopedias; you used to be able to find them in libraries near the microfiche.)
The professors are a splendid gathering of the best of the character actors of the time: "Cuddles" Sakall, Henry Travers, Hichard Haydn and on and on. Their leader and chief egghead is Gary Cooper playing wonderfully against type. (He did this in a great comic western once: See "Along Came Jones" when it comes along.) The result is funny and charming; and, yes, we really are touched by the innocence of long ago and far away.
For those who don't know the work of the young Barbara Stanwyck, this is a good one to serve as introduction. She really is a ball of fire.

Genre: Western
Director: Irving Cummings
Cast: Randolph Scott, Gene Tierney, Dana Andrews, Shepperd Strudwick, Elizabeth Patterson, Chill Wills, Louise Beavers, Olin Howland, Paul E. Burns, Joe Sawyer

The real Belle Starr was not a nice person, but her story is romanticized in this film with Gene Tierney as the outlaw. Belle, who lost all her land during the Civil War, marries guerilla leader Sam Starr (Randolph Scott) and they continue to take on the Yankees after the war. Tierney is wonderful to look at but certainly is miscast in this one.

Worth its Three Oscars1fatts 04/13/2009
It would be hard to overstate the importance of this film, not simply as a Hollywood triumph: Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor -- but as an intelligent, sensitive portrayal of the America the GIs returned to when WW2 was over.
Our protagonists, every one of them, are imperfect, each of them made both better and more fragile by what they had seen and what they had done. The struggle to rebuild lives and to come to grips with had been left behind never to be found again, is moving and. finally, compellng and believable. The complexity of Fredrick March's character is wonderful: deep nobility and vulnerability co-existing in what is ultimately a real human being.
A trreasure.
