Although both work for a Manhattan real-estate firm, brothers Andy (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and Hank (Ethan Hawke) desperately need money. Connie (Diane Lane) falls during a windstorm and is rescued by a much younger man Paul Martel (Oliver Martinez). Now, she puts her seemingly stable marriage, which includes a young son Charlie (Erik Per Sullivan), to Edward (Richard Gere) on hold and indulges in an adulterous affair with Paul. Edward becomes suspicious and hires Frank Wilson (Dominic Chianese) to investigate. When Edward learns about Paul, he confronts him, and tragedy ensues. Lane was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar.
