Mama Rose has dreamed of stardom but having failed now concentrates on her daughters June (Jennifer Rae Beck) and Louise (Gibb) in her effort to turn them into vaudeville stars. Louise does succeed, but, instead of becoming a vaudeville star, she gains fame as burlesque stripper "Gypsy Rose Lee."

Meanwhile, Boyle falls in love with a Salvadorian, Maria (Elpidia Carrillo), and must find the means to get her out of the country alive. This is based on a true story and conveys the excitement of the time. Woods was nominated for an Oscar.
