Then, when school starts, Maggie becomes a cheerleader and meets football star Cappie Roew (Charlie Sheen). Now she has a new group of friends, and Lucas is not included. Lucas' solution: join the football team. He does make the team, but it takes an injury requiring hospitalization for him to gain the respect of the team.

During those summer months, as a result of Shoop's unorthodox teaching style, not only the students but the coach as well learn much about themselves and what it takes to succeed. Director Carl Reiner is able to keep this movie entertaining and funny.
