When Roderick (Ray Milland) and his sister, Pamela (Ruth Hussey), buy and move into an old mansion, they experience strange occurrences. They are visited by Stella (Gail Russell) who tells them that her deceased mother claimed the house is haunted and that the ghosts intend to harm Stella. The previous owner is Stella's grandfather (Donald Crisp) who seems to know something but does not discuss it. Meanwhile, Roderick and Stella fall in love, and now they are determined to find the reasons behind the house's frightening supernatural activities.
