When Social Studies teacher Eugene Simonet (Kevin Spacey) assigns an extra-credit project, 11-year-old Trevor McKinney (Haley Joel Osment) comes up with an idea that will not only change the lives of people around him but many others all over the world as well. Trevor's plan is to "Pay it Forward" to three people in his life on the promise that people he helps will "Pay it Forward" to three others, and so on. His efforts change the life of his alcoholic mother Arlene (Helen Hunt), his physically scarred bitter teacher, and drug-addicted transient Jerry (James Caveizel) living near his home. Unbeknownst to Trevor, his efforts for these three people result in an ever-widening circle of good deeds that circle the world grabbing the attention of news writer Chris Chandler (Jay Mohr) and putting him on a mission to find the person who started the "Pay it Forward" movement.
