This remake of the 1930 classic is, in many respects, just as good. It tells the story of Paul Baumer (Richard Thomas) and his German classmates who are urged by their patriotic teacher Kantorek (Donald Pleasence) to enlist in the army during World War I. They do enlist, are trained by Corporal Himmelstoss (Ian Holm) and then head for the battlefield where they serve under Stanislaus Katczinsky (Ernest Borgnine). Many of Paul's friends are killed in battle, and after Paul stabs and kills a French soldier, he is convinced that fighting a war is not the patriotic game he believed it was. The film received seven Emmy nominations, including Best Supporting Actor and Actress (Borgnine and Patricia Neal for her role as Paul's mother).
