  David Leary (Rick Moranis) is a novelist who returns to his hometown of Hastings, Minnesota to teach at his old high school. He runs into his old nemesis, Ross "Fang" Bigger (Tom Arnold), who is now the shop teacher, and the feud from 25-years-ago is on again.

  All the usual characters–popular jock Jake (Chris Evans), nasty cheerleader Priscilla (Jaime Pressly), smart girl from the wrong side of the tracks Janey (Chyler Leigh), and undercover reporter Sadie(Beverly Polcyn)–attend John Hughes High School in this spoof on teen movies. Janey is an outcast with her plain looks and paint-spotted clothes, and Jake bets that he can transform her into the prom queen.

  This film is a gentle adventure meant to amuse young children. It succeeds in telling a story about two places–the magical Island of Sodor and the "real" town of Shining Time–and Mr. Conductor (Alec Baldwin) who uses his magic gold dust to travel on the magic railroad, which is pulled by the steam engine Thomas (voice of Edward Glen) and his friends. Thomas is having problems with the evil diesel engine, Diesel 10 (voice of Neil Crone), who wants to destroy a magical lost engine, which just happens to be in the possession of Burnett Stone (Peter Fonda), but nobody knows that Burnett has it.

As the story begins, this twosome are on the way to San Diego leaving behind Mary Jo's fourth husband. Once "settled in," Ava finds her niche, but Mary Jo is still a piece of work in progress. Janet McTeer received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
