The dialogue is funny, and the movie is entertaining. Charles Coburn took home the Oscar for his supporting role in this film. There were five other nominations, including Best Picture, Actress, and Director.

Ruth yearns to be a writer, while Eileen is determined to find success on the stage. Ruth finds success in her field when she starts writing about her sister Eileen, and she finds love with magazine editor Robert Barker (Brian Aherne) who has taken an interest in helping both sisters succeed with their plans. Russell received an Oscar nomination for her performance. A musical version was made in 1955, which followed a Broadway musical remake.

This is a good film adaptation of Lillian Hellman's play. Lukas won the Best Actor Oscar and nominations were received for Best Picture, Supporting Actress (Lucile Watson), and Writing-Screenplay (Dashiell Hammett).
