Detective William Cornish (William "Stage" Boyd) enters the case and uncovers the truth: Enid's brother died of the bubonic plague, and the hotel–not wanting to alarm the guests–is involved in a coverup. This story grew out of rumors involving a hotel guest's death during the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago.
