In this adaptation of John Katzenbach's novel, Sean Connery plays Harvard law professor Paul Armstrong who is opposed to the death penalty. Bobby Earl Ferguson (Blair Underwood) has been in a Florida prison for eight years awaiting the death penalty for the crimes of rape and murder. After Bobby's grandmother Evangeline (Ruby Dee) delivers Bobby's letter asking Paul for help, he agrees to investigate. Despite the fact that he has not practiced law for 25 years, Paul heads to Florida with his wife Laurie (Kate Capshaw) and young daughter Katie (Scarlett Johansson). As he uncovers clues during the investigation, Paul finds that his own life has become endangered.
