Eleven-year-old Nim (Abigail Breslin) lives on a South Pacific volcanic island with her marine biologist father. Jodie Foster plays the author, Alexandra Rover, of Nim's favorite stories who connects with Nim via the Internet. Meanwhile, Jack's boat is damaged in a storm leaving Nim stranded alone on the island. She e-mails Alexandra for help, and agoraphobic Alexandra takes a daring leap and finds the courage to travel to the island to help Nim.
