In the early 1900s, eccentric Charlie (Gena Rowlands) heads a family consisting of her daughter, Sophia (Mimi Rogers), and granddaughter (Susan May Pratt). Her husband had previously left Charlie and, after Sophia's husband died at a young age, Sophia and her daughter move in with Charlie. This made-for-TV film covers the family's story over the following few decades. Based on a novel by Kaye Gibbons.
