From the outside, Anne (Emily Watson) and James (Tom Wilkinson) appear to have a good, upper-middle-class marriage spending alternate times at their London flat and country home. But Anne, who has not been happy with James, turns to charming William Bule (Rupert Everett)–an act that leads to a tragedy (involving the hit-and-run death of a cyclist). Deceptions follow, but James steps in to help Anne.
