  Martin (Hywel Bennett) is 21 years old, but when he suffers from stress, Martin takes on the personality of a six-year-old "Georgie." After Martin is caught stealing a toy duck to give to his mongoloid brother, Susan (Hayley Mills) talks the store manager out of pressing charges. When his stepfather (Frank Finlay) hears of the incident, he throws Martin out of the house, and "Georgie" moves into the boarding house of Susan's mother (Billie Whitelaw). Murders ensue when Martin kills his stepfather and then Susan's mother as his solution to problems in his life.
