UCLA freshman Sara Matthews (Minka Kelly) arrives at school and meets her dorm roommate Rebecca (Leighton Meester) who is a borderline schizophrenic and is not taking her medications. Sara falls in love with Stephen (Cam Gigandet), and it interferes with Rebecca's dream of bonding with Sara. Rebecca becomes intensely possessive of Sara, which endangers Sara, Stephen, and Sara's friend Tracy (Alyson Michalka), and, when Rebecca believes that Sara is planning to move out, violence erupts.
