Chinese communist resistance leader "Jack" Chen Hansheng (Chow Yun-Fat) and American nurse Lee Pearson (Radha Mitchell) save him and convince Hogg to recuperate at the Huang Shi orphanage where he ends up helping to care for 60 starving young boys who were orphaned by the war. When Hogg learns that the Japanese plan to force the boys into the army, he leads them on a 700-mile trek across the desert and to their ultimate safety.

As martial arts films go, this one is excellent as it relates the story of the quest for a legendary sword–Green Destiny–that has been stolen from the rightful martial arts owner Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun-Fat). Ready to retire, Li had given his sword to fellow martial arts friend Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh) to deliver to Sir Te (Sihung Lung) in Peking. But, the sword is stolen from Yu, and she is now in hot pursuit. Li arrives on the scene and, in their world of martial arts action, Yu and Li search together for the missing sword and might even find love at the same time. Dazzling. The film won four Oscars including Best Foreign Film, Art Direction, and Cinematography. It was also nominated for Best Picture and Director.

When he is betrayed by his boss, he teams up with Detective "Eagle" Lee (Danny Lee) who has been assigned to get him to fight off the REAL bad guys. The characters are well developed, the directing is superb, and the action is spectacular.
