Following World War II, Dr. Sanada (Takashi Shimura) operates a clinic in the slums of Tokyo. Sanada is an alcoholic, but when he treats young gangster Matsunaga (Toshiro Mifune) for tuberculosis, Sanada recognizes that in order to perform his duties successfully, he must get his life in order. The two men engage in a love-hate relationship as their needs cause each man to become dependent on the other.
