The River   1997     3 stars    N/R, 115 min.
Genre: Foreign / Drama
Director: Tsai Ming-liang
Cast: Lee Kang-sheng, Miao Tien, Lu Hsiao-ling, Chen Chao-jung, Chen Shiang-chyi, Lu Shiao-lin, Ann Hui, Yang Kuei-Mei

A young man (Lee Kang-sheng) lives with his parents and also has a terrible pain in his neck from floating in the contaminated river for a movie shot. His father (Miao Tien) spends his time trying to divert rain from a leaky roof away from his bed, eating at McDonalds, and having homosexual encounters at the local bath. His mother, when not working, has an affair with a porno salesman. But it's not the story that makes the film successful, it is the mood that is created of miserable, hopeless lives; few words are spoken. This is the third in a series of four films by Tsai Ming-liang that has Lee Kang-sheng in the leading role as the same character of a lonely man trying to connect to reality in Taipei.

Protagonist Hsiao-kang (Lee Kang-sheng) is back for the fifth time in this art film from Taiwan. Patience is the theme of the story, which continues on after the death of Hsiao-kang's father. When Hsiao-kang sells a watch (that may have a connection to his father) to a woman who is leaving for Paris, the sale sets off Hsiao-kang's obsession to reset every clock to Parisian time–somehow connecting them to the watch that is now in Paris.
