But hazing, pornographic violence, and sexual threats appear to be the order of the day for the women who are outnumbered by the men in the mines. Josie endures abuse until she hires a lawyer (Sean Bean) to sue for sexual harassment, which marked the first successful case of its kind in the United States. Charlize Theron received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, and Frances McDormand was nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

After Tara pleads with him, Uncle James for the first time in his life finds a purpose and helps her escape her surroundings. The two hit the road as father and daughter in order to throw off the authorities. They end up at the Utah farmhouse of James' father Grandpa Reedy (Dennis Hopper) who had abused James and Joleen when they were young. The abuse begins again, and more violence is a certainty.
