Caden (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and Adele's (Catherine Keener) marriage is falling apart, and Adele takes their daughter Olive (Sadie Goldstein) on a trip to visit her friend Maria (Jennifer Jason Leigh). Caden suffers from a series of ailments that are shutting down his autonomic function. He sees therapist Madeleine Gravis (Hope Davis), but that gets him nowhere. Caden gathers an ensemble cast in a New York City warehouse and directs them to live out their lives in a small mockup of the outside city. Time passes, Caden and Adele are divorced, and Olive is growing up in Europe.
