But, artist Jimmy Baxter (Bruce Bennett), who is not aware of Betsy's true identity, interferes because he thinks the loan sharks are good guys.

First, he writes a will giving his money to the families who have been hurt by the criminals he defended. Then, he defends William Jackson (Paul Guilfoyle) on a murder charge, wins his freedom, but then is murdered by Jackson. His plan has backfired, but evidence points to Lucile and Dr. Anderson as the murderers. When they are arrested, Anderson kills himself. That act leaves Lucille–who has been left destitute by Martin's will–all alone in the world.
