Tensions rise after the submarine arrives in New London, and Stewart learns that Connors is already engaged to Jean. Although the two must work together, when the submarine is ordered back to sea to take part in a secret mission, tensions reach new heights over both the war effort and Jean.

  Great special effects highlight this colorful sci-fi film about the shakedown cruise of the U.S.S. Seaview. The submarine's designer, U.S. Navy Admiral Harriman Nelson (Walter Pidgeon), is aboard, and, when a giant fire in the sky is spotted, Harriman, without permission, takes on the mission to knock out the fire that he believes threatens to destroy Earth. This decision causes conflict between Nelson and the Seaview's captain, Commander Lee Crane (Robert Sterling), as well as suspicions of psychiatrist Dr. Susan Hiller (Joan Fontaine) who questions Nelson's sanity. To make matters worse, there appears to be a saboteur aboard the Seaview.
