On Larry's first night at the museum, he falls asleep and awakens to a museum filled with animated dinosaurs, dioramas, and wax figures that have come to life. Larry learns that this has been happening since the 1950s after the arrival of an Egyptian Tablet, and he now understands that his job is to make sure the museum is back in order by the time it opens each morning.
