The film received several Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, Actor (Pacino), Director, and Supporting Actor (Chris Sarandon) and won the award for Best Writing.

Ibsen and McQueen clearly demonstrate once again that one person can change the world while also demonstrating the real danger of sometimes having that courage of conviction. I saw this sadly-unrecognized film in the late 1970s and it has "haunted" me ever since. I dearly wish it were available on DVD to view over and over and over. |

Ritter boards the airship and follows leads that include his ex-lover Ursula (Anne Bancroft), businessman Edward Douglas (Gig Young), suspicious crew members, and the captains Pruss (Charles Durning) and Lehmann (Richard Dysart). Ritter believes that a sabotage is planned and tries to get the blimp landed and the passengers out of danger. But, the Hindenburg explodes over New Jersey, and 36 people are killed.

A CIA chief, Ross (Charles Durning), struggles for control, and rival chief Cooper (Dabney Coleman) stands in his way. Ross devises a scheme in which he randomly picks out a man with one red shoe, concert violinist Richard (Tom Hanks), and tells Cooper that the man is suspected of being a super-agent and that Cooper should keep a close eye on him. Cooper brings in Maddy (Lori Singer) to seduce Richard, and Richard falls in love with her–all of which leads to even more complications.
