Then, Johnny wins $60,000 at the race track, but before he and Mibs can spend the money on their marriage, word leaks out that Johnny is the chief suspect in a $70,000 embezzlement at their bank. By story's end, it is learned that Mib's adding machine has a mechanical problem, no money is missing from the bank, and, maybe just maybe, Johnny and Mibs can live happily ever after.

Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, as Guy and Mimi, run into each other at a resort where Mimi is awaiting her divorce. Mimi mistakes Guy for the man (Erik Rhodes) who her aunt (Alice Brady) has hired to have a tryst with Mimi and, thus, provide the grounds for her divorce. Complications ensue when Guy is attracted to Mimi, but she, because of the mix-up, does not treat him well. By story's end, all ends happily. The dances to "The Continental" and "Night and Day" are delightfully performed in this film. "The Continental" won the Academy Award for Best Song, the first year that the award was given for this category. Nominations were also received for four other awards, including Best Picture.

Love does conquer all of the problems, and Jerry swears off alcohol in order to build a life together with Joan.

Although branded as "Communist propaganda" when it was first released in the U.S., this film was acclaimed in Europe. The story revolves around a strike against a New Mexico zinc mine. When the strikers are forced to leave the picket line, their wives take up the cause–standing up not only to mine officials but to their husbands as well.
