The plane takes off, but they only get as far as an African wildlife preserve where Alex reunites with his mom (voice of Sherri Shepherd) and dad (voice of Bernie Mac) who Alex has not seen since he was stolen from them when he was just a cub. Alex must now deal with his dad's rival Makunga (voice of Alec Baldwin), and the zoo animals use their diversity to overcome all obstacles as they come in contact with their wild counterparts in this story showing the value of distinctiveness being a virtue.

But Petey plays a key role instilling hope in a generation of listeners as he addresses the Black community during the turbulence of the anti-Vietnam War and pro-Civil Rights era.
