In the early 1930s, John Dillinger was on the FBI's "most wanted" list; his bank robberies had made him famous, but he is captured by "Big Jim" Wollard (Read Morgan) and sent to prison. He escapes from jail and rejoins the gang of hoods that now includes Pretty Boy Floyd (Steve Kanaly) and Baby Face Nelson (Richard Dreyfuss). They continue the bank robberies while FBI agent Melvin Purvis (Ben Johnson) is determined to put an end to their illegal activities. This story is seen through the eyes of Purvis who is behind the gunning down of Dillinger outside the Biograph Theater in Chicago.
