When they land in the small town of East Port, Massachusetts, they find a home, and the girls hope that, at last, they will settle down after moving 18 times in Charlotte's lifetime. Kate shines as a swimmer on her school's swim team, while Charlotte plans to become a nun–despite the fact that they are Jewish. Meanwhile, Mrs. Flax begins a romance with Lou (Bob Hoskins). At the same time, Charlotte falls in love, from afar, with Joe (Michael Schoeffling) but finds confusion setting in and prays daily to keep her religious fervor.
