Years into his career as butler, James Stevens (Anthony Hopkins) looks back on younger days when he had choices concerning his future. Through flashbacks, James remembers Mary Kenton (Emma Thompson), the head housekeeper, who fell in love with him and provided the challenges to him concerning his employer, Lord Darlington (James Fox) and his devotion to the Nazi cause in pre-World War II Britain.
