Frances (Jacqueline Bisset) has led a spirited activist life and has even been a popular D.J., known as "Sleepy Time Gal," at a small radio station. Now a freelance writer in San Francisco, she is dying of cancer. She takes a trip to visit an old lover to ask about the daughter, Rebecca (Martha Plimpton), they had given up for adoption. Meanwhile, Rebecca has been searching for her birth mother, and their lives cross when, in the course of the Rebecca's work, she is told about the D.J. called "Sleepy Time Gal." Good performances enhance this film.

Although Blanche appears to be a refined woman, Stanley learns there is more to her than meets the eye and sabotages her romance with his friend Mitch (John Goodman). Alec Baldwin and Lange repeated their Broadway roles in this film.
