Benjamin (Eduardo Lopez Rojas) works in his small-town store with his obnoxious sister (Malena Doria), with whom he also lives. When not working, he hangs out with a bunch of his old friends. One day lovely teenager Natividad (Arcelia Ramirez) walks by, and Benjamin falls in love. He and his buddies formulate a plan to kidnap her, but when he has her in his apartment, he is too shy to do anything. Natividad, on the other hand, thinks he is a good catch and takes over the household.

This film, based on an 1875 Portuguese novel, features Gael Garcia Bernal in the role of a newly ordained priest, Father Amaro, who is sent to a small, Mexican town to assist an elderly priest, Father Benito (Sancho Gracia), and to look into the activities of the town's other priests. It isn't long before Amaro falls in love with 16-year-old Amelia (Ana Claudia Talancon). As if this were not enough, Padre Benito has major drug connections as well as a mistress of his own–Amelia's mother, Sanjuanera (Angelica Aragon).
